"When bananas were broadly introduced in the 1880s, tableware designers and glass manufacturers quickly responded by producing special footed serving bowls, called banana bowls or banana boats, which carefully cradled a bunch of bananas."

I went camping once with this girl who had concocted an ingenious treat she called a 'banana boat'. She slit a banana down the side, scooped out about half of it, filled the resultant empty space with peanut butter, bar chocolate, and marshmellows, folded everything back up, wrapped in aluminum foil and stuck in the coals till it was all mushy and melty. Sweetest, sugariest, stickiest, messiest banana I've had in my life. And Hercules, was it good.

That sounds much better than the what I've heard called a banana boat, which are those very small, very tight speedo-style bathing suits for men. I believe they're more common in Europe than America. Also known as a banana hammock.
